While President Donald Trump seems eager to distance himself from the process, Italy has supported his suggestion that the Vatican may mediate negotiations for a ceasefire in Ukraine.
Italy was prepared to “facilitate contacts and work towards peace” in Ukraine, according to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s office, which also “viewed positively” the Pope’s offer to host the negotiations at the Vatican.
Actually, there is still no definite agreement on future talks; Moscow made more demands during last Friday’s meeting between Russian and Ukrainian officials in Istanbul rather than making any headway.
Last week, Pope Leo declared that he would “make every effort” to ensure peace and that the Vatican was “always ready” to unite adversaries.
