WASHINGTON: According to a new study released Friday, man-made climate change caused half of the world’s population to experience one extra month of intense heat over the previous year.
According to the authors, the results highlight how the ongoing use of fossil fuels is detrimental to health and well-being on all continents, with the consequences in emerging nations being particularly underappreciated.
The report’s co-author, Friederike Otto, a climate scientist at Imperial College London, stated that “heat waves will affect more people with every barrel of oil burned, every tonne of carbon dioxide released, and every fraction of a degree of warming.”
Scientists from the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Center, Climate Central, and World Weather Attribution completed the analysis, which was published in advance of June 2nd, global Heat Action Day.
