KATHMANDU: Authorities reported Tuesday that more than two dozen people were still missing after heavy rains in China’s Tibet region caused the Bhote Koshi River to overflow, destroying the “Friendship Bridge” that connects China and Nepal.
Given that there had not been any significant rainfall in the river’s immediate catchment area during the previous 24 hours, meteorologists speculated that the flood may have been caused by a glacial lake in Tibet overflowing.
On the Chinese side of the mountainous border region, 11 people are missing, according to China’s official Xinhua news agency, while at least 18 people are missing in Nepal.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), three police officers and six Chinese employees were among the missing in Nepal.
