KABUL: The United Nations said Thursday that Taliban officials were violating the human rights of Afghans who were compelled to return by Iran and Pakistan, including torturing them and holding them arbitrarily.
Millions of Afghans have been compelled to return to Afghanistan as a result of massive deportation campaigns initiated by Iran and Pakistan; the vast bulk of these individuals, over 1.9 million as of 2025, are from Iran.
“People returning to the country who were at particular risk of reprisals and other human rights violations by the de facto (Taliban) authorities were women and girls, individuals affiliated with the former government and its security forces, media workers and civil society,” according to a statement issued alongside the publication of the findings.
