Valdo Calocane repeatedly stabbed 19-year-olds Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar as they were making their way home from a night out celebrating the end of their exams.
In the early hours of June 13, 2023, the 32-year-old also fatally stabbed 65-year-old school caretaker Ian Coates with a knife while he was traveling to Huntingdon Academy for work.
Today the university is hosting a memorial service, during which the chaplain and vice chancellor will observe a two-minute silence.
The families of Webber, Coates, and O’Malley-Kumar declared in a statement prior to the funeral that the murders were a “series of horrific.
The Court of Appeal rejected the families’ attempt to appeal the sentence, ruling in May that it was “not unduly lenient” in light of the medical evidence supporting his paranoid schizophrenia diagnosis.
Following the attacks, Calocane’s four prior hospital admissions and the fact that an arrest warrant had been issued months prior to the killings have led to the three families leveling severe criticism at Nottinghamshire Police and the Nottinghamshire Healthcare Foundation Trust.
