This past Wednesday evening, four kids in the Memon Goth neighborhood of Karachi’s Malir neighborhood tragically slipped into a manhole. The toddlers fell into the exposed hole as a result of the manhole cover giving way unexpectedly.
Two of the children’s bodies were subsequently found, while the other two were saved alive but remain in serious condition.
The names of the deceased are six-year-old Taha and four-year-old Hasnain. The two children that were saved alive, Abbas, age eleven, and Saqib, age four, are presently in critical condition and are being treated at Jinnah Hospital.
Locals said the kids had placed a sabeel over the manhole, and then the cover—which was only shakily fastened—suddenly came off.Due to the neighborhood’s inadequate sewage system, homeowners are obliged to dig sizable sewage wells, which puts the community at serious risk.
According to a local, “the manhole cover was not secure and it just fell off, causing this tragedy.” “We do not have a proper sewage system here, and people have dug these large wells which are very dangerous.”
As soon as emergency personnel got on the site, they were able to remove the children’s injuries and the bodies from the manhole. Immediately after, the injured and the bodies were sent to Jinnah Hospital for additional treatment.
