Officials believe that by making the Arctic region more accessible than ever before, the first of three airport projects will strengthen the local economy.
Greenland is a large autonomous region inside the Kingdom of Denmark that is covered by an ice covering and has a small population.
Nuuk, its capital, is a small town of 18,000 people located on the southwest coast. Overlooking a vast sea fjord are colorful wooden houses and modern apartment buildings.
Small 35-seat propeller planes take off and land from a tarmac runway perched on a slope above the city
At the moment, anyone who wants to travel abroad must first board one of these planes, travel 200 miles (319 km) north to Kangerlussuaq, a remote former military airstrip, and then board a larger aircraft.
Currently one of only two runways on Greenland long enough for large jets, Kangerlussuaq was constructed by the Americans during World War II. The other is Narsarsuaq, which was formerly a US military installation in the country’s extreme south.
However, a new, longer runway and a modern new terminal building will allow large jets to arrive in Nuuk for the first time starting at the end of November.
