The vampire horror film Sinners has made history at this year’s Oscars, earning a record-breaking 16 nominations. This is the most nominations ever for a single film, beating the previous record of 14.
The movie’s closest competitor this year is Leonardo DiCaprio’s thriller One Battle After Another, which received 13 nominations. But Sinners stole the spotlight thanks to strong performances and widespread acclaim. Michael B. Jordan leads the cast, supported by British stars Wunmi Mosaku and Delroy Lindo, all of whom earned nominations for their work.
Other big names in contention include Timothée Chalamet, who hopes to win after two previous nominations, and Irish actress Jessie Buckley, a frontrunner for Best Actress for her role in Hamnet. Unfortunately, her co-star Paul Mescal, who played William Shakespeare, did not get a nomination.
Fans of the musical Wicked: For Good were also left disappointed, as neither the film nor its stars, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, made it onto the ballot.
The record nominations for Sinners show that horror films can compete with serious drama when they combine strong acting and compelling storytelling. With the Oscars approaching, all eyes are on the film to see if it can turn its nominations into wins.
