Sensitive customer data, including allegedly private information about high-ranking government officials, was leaked by a ransomware attack that targeted Namibia’s state-owned telecoms business.
According to Telecom Namibia, the data was made public after the company declined to cooperate with Hunters International, a hacker collective.
According to the company, it is currently looking into how such a significant system compromise happened.
Nangolo Mbumba, the outgoing president, has denounced the cyberattack.
According to The Namibian newspaper, he demanded that it be handled with the “urgency it deserves” and added that cybersecurity was a national security issue.
According to local media, the hackers took about 500,000 pieces of data, including financial and personal data.
