If winemaker Maxime Chapoutier attempted to sell two of his most recent wines in his home country of France, he would be jailed.
“There would likely be outrage about these wines in France, and that would be a good thing,” according to him. “Sometimes you need to be provocative to drive change.”
Due to their blend of French and Australian base wines, the two bottles in question—one red and one white—would be prohibited in France.
It is illegal to produce a wine using both EU and non-EU fruit, according to both French and EU law. Such matters are taken quite severely by authorities, especially in France.
