LAHORE: In light of growing limitations, declining safety, and job security, a recent Freedom Network report presents a sobering assessment of press freedom in Pakistan, pointing to a “existential threat” to the media landscape.
The problem has been made worse by recent revisions to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Peca) made in January of this year, according to the annual “Freedom of Expression and Media Freedom Report 2025,” “Free speech and public interest journalism under siege.”
The findings indicate that these revisions have made it “easier” for authorities to arrest, punish, and imprison opposition voices and journalists both online and offline.
