As it began reading out an opinion on states’ legal duty to act, the top court of the United Nations (UN) emphasized “the urgent and existential threat posed by climate change” on Wednesday.
The future direction of global climate action is probably going to be determined by the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) non-binding ruling.
“Greenhouse gas emissions are unequivocally caused by human activities which are not territorially limited,” stated Judge Yuji Iwasawa. The court had not yet made its conclusions public, and the opinion was still being read.
Climate activists gathered outside the ICJ ahead of the decision, shouting, “What do we want? Climate justice! When would we like it? “Now!”
