Agriculture and Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli reported on Wednesday that ten firemen had been killed and fourteen injured while fighting to suppress a wildfire in the central Turkish province of Eskisehir.
Since Tuesday, firefighters and rescue crews have been fighting to contain a wildfire in the Seyitgazi region of Eskisehir.
Yumakli told reporters that 24 firemen were stuck in the fire on Wednesday as the wind abruptly shifted and began blowing flames in their direction. The minister stated that although they were rushed to the hospital right after, 10 of them passed away and 14 others were still receiving treatment.
“They were fighting the fire above the hill, while we were fighting it at the bottom,” firefighter Ercan Temel, who was present at the scene, told Ihlas News Agency.
