A popular diet pattern that involves alternating between times of fasting and eating, intermittent fasting was the subject of a study conducted by researchers from Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine in China.
This study found that individuals who restricted food consumption to less than eight hours per day had a 91% higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease over an eight-year period, compared to people who ate across 12 to 16 hours. Previous research has suggested that such eating patterns can help people lose weight and lower their blood pressure.
Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which was conducted between 2003 and 2018, served as the basis for the analysis that was presented at the American Heart Association’s (AHA) scientific sessions in Chicago on Monday. This analysis has not yet undergone peer review or been published in an academic journal.
