In January of last year, Holly Newton was attacked in the Priestpopple district of Hexham, Northumberland, resulting in 36 knife injuries.
Despite being brought to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary, she was unable to be saved. A 16-year-old boy required surgery for injuries to his arm, leg, and shoulder after he was also brought to the hospital.
providing proof through a video link The 17-year-old defendant told jurors during his trial at Newcastle Crown Court on Thursday that while he could remember getting off a bus the day of the attack, he could not remember the stabbings.
The adolescent has acknowledged manslaughter but continues to deny murder, claiming he had no intention of doing grievous injury.
When defense attorney KC Nigel Edwards questioned the 16-year-old boy, he was asked who had stabbed Holly and the other teen.
The defendant answered “me” to both queries while sporting a suit jacket, shirt, and tie. He then claimed to have come to Hexham with the intention of ending his own life.
Mr. Edwards was asking, “The night that Holly died, when you go to Hexham, what is it you want to do?”
