On Sunday afternoon, the item was discovered in Beer, a south coast seaside village. Police were notified by witnesses who thought it might be an unexploded shell.
According to Devon and Cornwall Police, they received a call around 4 p.m. on August 25 regarding a possible unexploded bomb that had washed up on the shore.
Weston-super-Mare resident Adrian Bamford told the News that he discovered the item while camping with his family.
“My daughter then stumbled across the half-buried shell under the pebbles” as they were strolling along the shore.
When my oldest son pushed the pebbles out of the way and we realized it might have been a weapon, she pointed it out,” Mr. Bamford continued.
“My son picked it up and dragged it away to see if it was real or unused, not realizing that.” He said it was really heavy, so we looked up the image of an old empty shell online.
“It appeared full to us and wasn’t empty at all. After being picked up by my youngest son, I called 999 and awaited further instructions.
