Climate scientist Carl Schreck is from North Carolina and was personally affected by Hurricane Helene, which devastated his community and claimed the lives of at least 230 people.
After Hurricane Katrina, Helene is now the second-deadliest hurricane to strike the continental United States in more than 50 years.
After spending his whole career observing tropical storms from a distance, Schreck’s viewpoint was drastically altered when a family he knew killed in the disaster and others’ homes were inundated. “Seeing it firsthand is truly heartbreaking,” he said, highlighting the effects on his neighborhood.
A World Weather Attribution assessment verified that climate change increased Hurricane Helene’s devastating force as it approached Florida.
