Just after 2:30 p.m. local time, the vehicle swerved off a road in the Melbourne neighborhood of Hawthorn East, slammed through a fence, and struck an outdoor table occupied by five youngsters.
After being admitted to the hospital with severe injuries, an 11-year-old kid passed away.
According to Victoria Police, two 11-year-old girls, a 10-year-old girl, and a 10-year-old boy were also transported to the hospital with severe injuries.
After picking up a child from the school, the 40-year-old lady who was driving the car made a U-turn and collided with the fence.
She is still being held by the police after being detained on the spot.
The young passenger in the vehicle was unharmed.
Detective Inspector Craig McEvoy of the Major Collision Investigation Unit stated, “It looks to be a tragic accident.”
The car’s front left side was damaged, according to the scene’s video footage.
