For the first time, the European Union’s climate agency reports that the Earth’s temperature in 2024 has increased more than 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) beyond the pre-industrial normal.
According to the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), this year is also “virtually certain” to surpass 2023 as the warmest on record. This was stated on Thursday.
Days before countries are expected to convene for crucial climate negotiations headed by the UN, C3S deputy director Samantha Burgess stated, “This represents a new milestone in global temperature records and should serve as a catalyst to raise ambition for the upcoming Climate Change Conference, COP29.”
According to the European agency, the world was hitting a “new milestone” in temperature records.
