As fights between armed gangs, the police, and civilians brandishing machetes have escalated in recent days, the United Nations has ordered its employees to leave Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince.
A UN helicopter transported 14 evacuees at a time from the capital to Cap-Haitien in the north on Monday; some of them are expected to board planes abroad. This follows the closure of Port-au-Prince’s main international airport earlier this month after gunfire struck commercial aircraft during takeoff and landing.
According to diplomatic and security officials who spoke to Al Jazeera, the flight also includes other rescue organizations and foreign embassies.
On Sunday, a US Air Force C-130 plane touched down at the airport in the capital, Port-au-Prince.
