With at least 70 people dead, Iran’s interior minister has stated that carelessness had a role in the devastating explosion and fire at the nation’s biggest container port.
According to Eskandar Momeni, “shortcomings, including noncompliance with safety precautions and negligence” were the cause of Saturday’s explosion at Shahid Rajaee port in Bandar Abbas, which also left over 1,000 people injured.
He stated that “some individuals deemed responsible” had been called in for interrogation.
According to customs officials, imported cargo exploded after catching fire. Foreign allegations that it was a consignment of a chemical used in missile fuel have been refuted by the defense ministry.
