Over 3,500 contract workers were let go by Pakistan’s Utility Stores Corporation.
“Letters have been sent to regional managers regarding this decision,” said Arif Shah, Secretary General of the All Pakistan Workers Alliance Utility Stores, who verified the action. Employees in grades one through thirteen may be fired by regional supervisors.
The Utility Stores Union condemned the decision, and the fired contract workers retaliated by staging a demonstration at Scheme Mor in Lahore. Citing a Supreme Court ruling that purportedly upheld the workers’ rights, the union declared the terminations unlawful. “On Monday, we plan to submit a writ for contempt of court,” Shah continued.
