Shortly before US President Joe Biden handed the reins to US contender Kamala Harris on Monday, protesters against Israel’s conflict in Gaza briefly broke through the outer security fence of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago.
The 81-year-old Biden stated, “Those protesters out in the street, they have a point,” but he did not specifically address the security breakdown in his hour-long speech. Innocent people are dying in large numbers in the Israel-Hamas conflict on both sides.
On the first day of the Democratic Party convention, a handful of protestors, estimated to number no more than 100, broke away from a larger march that included thousands of participants and turned their attention to the metal gates encircling the United Centre.
They were stopped from doing so by police wearing blue helmets with shields and black batons.
