The two attackers, a man and a woman, were murdered, according to Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya. Of the 22 injured, two are very ill.
After Turkish security personnel reached the site in the capital city of Ankara, local media reported hearing multiple gunshots.
On the fringes of a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Kazan, Russia, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared, “I condemn this heinous terrorist attack and wish mercy on our martyrs.”
Mr. Putin offered his sympathies while hosting world leaders at a BRICS conference of developing economies.
According to the state-run Anadolu Agency, one of the victims was identified as mechanical engineer Zahide Guclu, who had gone to the gate to pick up flowers that her husband had sent her.
According to Mr. Yerlikaya, the attack at the defense industry was thought to be carried out by the insurgent Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK. Yasar Guler, the minister of defense, also charged the PKK.
The Turkish defense ministry reported that its jets have carried out airstrikes against PKK targets in northern Iraq and northern Syria in retaliation for the attack; however, no one has yet to claim responsibility.
