Alam Hirzallah accepts a somber assignment at al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City: recording the deaths of his bereaved cousin’s wife and two children.
His family used a tuk-tuk or electric rickshaw to transport the bodies here. After Israeli bombardment struck the family’s home in eastern Gaza City, they discovered them there. Mayar, age five, Abdullah, age three, and Asma Hirzallah were killed.
Alam says, “The hospital asked for their full names and ID numbers,” which are the numbers assigned to every Palestinian in an Israeli-run population register.
“They instructed us to return for the death certificate after giving us a document attesting to their martyrdom. Since the cemeteries are now closed, we are unsure of where to bury them.
