Israel’s military chief has claimed that it has hit “operatives” responsible for attacking Druze residents on the outskirts of Damascus during a wave of sectarian violence that has reportedly claimed over 40 lives.
According to Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, he had told Israeli soldiers to make ready to attack targets of the Syrian government if the attacks on the religious minority persisted.
A BBC team heard strong but intermittent gunfire and saw airstrikes near Ashrafiyat Sahnaya, a town primarily inhabited by Druze, and nearby Sahnaya.
Following attacks by “outlaw groups” that claimed the lives of 16 of their men, Syrian forces subsequently declared that they had concluded an operation there to “restore security and stability.”
