The family of Syed Adil Shah, a Kashmiri horseman who was killed in last week’s incident, says they are proud of his “sacrifice” after he fought with a shooter while attempting to save tourists.
On April 22, as gunmen emerged from the treelines, Shah, 30, had led guests on his pony up to the meadows at Pahalgam in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), a verdant meadow tucked under snow-capped Himalayan peaks.
The peaceful meadows were being enjoyed by vacationers when at least three gunmen, who are still at large after a protracted manhunt, opened fire on the crowds using automatic weapons, killing 26 persons, including Shah.
From their little home tucked away on a wooded slope, his distraught father, Syed Haidar Shah, said, “He showed his humanity and that allows us to live on.”
