Local sources state that Ayesha Ali was admitted to the gynecology ward of the THQ Hospital in Gujar Khan on September 16 in preparation for childbirth. On Wednesday morning, an on-duty woman medical officer referred Ali to another hospital in Rawalpindi after the baby’s health declined in the mother’s womb, even though the on-call gynecologist and on-call anesthetist were available for the delivery.
Before the woman could be taken to a hospital in Rawalpindi, the infant was pronounced dead at a private hospital in Gujar Khan during her examination.
Medical Superintendent of THQ Hospital Gujar Khan’s incident report states that while Dr. Sarmad Kiyani, Dr. Jawaid Iqbal, the anesthetist, and Dr. Hira Tanvir, the gynecologist, were on call, they did not come to the hospital for the procedure.
