The NHS Dumfries and Galloway acknowledged that hackers had gained access to a “significant quantity of data” in March, including information that might be used to identify specific patients and staff members.
Subsequently, the cybercriminals issued a “proof pack” that contained private data on a limited number of patients and threatened to leak more.
The health board acknowledged that a “large volume of data” had been released in an update on Monday.
NHS Dumfries and Galloway Chief Executive Julie White called it a “utterly abhorrent criminal act”.
This result should not come as a surprise because it is consistent with aboard.
