Editor Nick Houy and director Greta Gerwig discuss how they avoided abrupt mood swings in Barbie by fusing serious and humorous aspects.
Considering the goals of the movie, Houy claimed that this was their greatest obstacle. Because there are a lot of hilarious and serious moments in this film…The largest issue, he said, was combining those two elements so that the audience wouldn’t experience whiplash. “Managing the tone changes, the script, and the footage to make everything feel cohesive.”
The widest strokes came easily, but it was challenging to fine-tune the last stages sequence-by-sequence to make sure that only flawless material remained. Because of this, Gerwig observed that movies have a “strange house of cards” vibe to them because of their short runs.
