Hail severely damaged the windscreen and nose of a Majorca-to-Vienna airliner.
It happened on Sunday afternoon when Austrian Airlines reported that Flight 0S434 passed through a thunderstorm cell that was not visible on radar.
On its way back from the Spanish island, the aircraft reportedly issued a mayday call, but it landed safely and without incident in Vienna.
Pictures of the Airbus A320 on social media displayed many collision marks on the windshield and a partially broken nose.
Austrian Airlines emphasized that the safety of its passengers and crew was its “primary concern” while stating that it was evaluating the damage.
It coincides with the announcement by Singapore Airlines of compensation plans for passengers injured by extreme turbulence on a flight last month.
British national Geoff Kitchen, 73, passed away in the event after the flight crew spent 20 minutes attempting to resuscitate him due to a suspected heart attack.
