In a landmark vote, members of parliament supported plans to legalize assisted suicide in England and Wales, opening the door for a legal change.
MPs voted in favor of a plan that would allow terminally ill adults who are expected to die within six months to request assistance in ending their own lives by a majority of 55, 330 to 275, in the first Commons vote on the matter in almost ten years.
It came after a heated discussion in the chamber during which members of parliament on both sides related personal experiences that influenced their choices.
The measure will now be subject to months of discussion and examination by peers and Members of Parliament, who may decide to make changes.
