Images from the Dutch capital showed a line of police officers dressed in riot gear holding back protestors. Some of the demonstrators were holding signs, while others were making peace gestures with their hands.
In local television footage, students were heard yelling, “shame on you” and “we are peaceful, what are you?”
A protest group earlier claimed to have taken over university buildings in Groningen, Eindhoven, and Amsterdam.
The Amsterdam police announced on social media platforms that the institution had reported the demonstrators for vandalism.
This afternoon, the force reported that a sizable contingent persisted on the Roeterseiland campus “despite numerous warnings.”
It said to go home and avoid Roeterseiland.
According to a University of Amsterdam spokesman, demonstrators had taken over the facility and caused some “destruction.”
