The Lebanese army in Beirut stopped an attacker’s attempt to storm the US Embassy in Lebanon on Wednesday morning.
Tensions were high in the small Mediterranean nation where hundreds had been displaced along the border by months of fighting between Israeli troops and Hezbollah militants. At the time of the attack, tensions were still present.
According to local media, there was a nearly 30-minute-long gunfire at the US diplomatic mission that involved at least one attacker.
The Lebanese army said in a post on the news that one of its members had injured a Syrian national, who was then detained and sent to the hospital for treatment. Previous reports said that four gunmen were engaged in all, including the one who was a slainer. Two court officials familiar with the case and a Lebanese security officer told the Associated Press that it appeared to be the work of a single gunman.an.
Later, the state-sponsored National News Agency of Lebanon reported that during a quick operation in the village of Majdal Anjar, the State Security Directorate, working with the Directorate of the Army Intelligence, also detained the brother of the shooting suspect who was charged with attacking the U.S. embassy.
