To lessen the financial strain of growing energy expenses, the Punjab government has announced plans to convert all 43 of the province’s prisons to solar power.
The proposal has been completed by the Home Department and sent to the chief minister for approval.
The department surveyed the prisons in partnership with the National Radio and Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC), predicting that the project would cost around Rs4.35 billion in total.
According to officials, this amount is less than the approximately Rs4.5 billion in yearly gas and power costs combined.
