London: On Monday, Britain’s internet safety law went into effect, mandating that social media firms, such as Facebook’s Meta and TikTok’s ByteDance, take steps to combat illegal conduct on their platforms and make them safer by design.
The first standards of practice on addressing unlawful harms such as child sexual abuse and aiding or inciting suicide have been released, according to media regulator Ofcom.
According to Ofcom, websites and apps have until March 16, 2025, to evaluate the hazards that illegal content presents to both adults and children on their platforms.
According to Ofcom, they will need to begin putting policies in place to reduce those risks beyond the deadline, including improved moderation, simpler reporting, and integrated safety checks.
