According to the authorities, a well-known far-right fanatic who was found guilty of killing South African anti-apartheid hero Chris Hani will be sent back to his home country of Poland.
In 1993, during a critical period as the nation was getting ready for its first multiracial elections, Janusz Walus, then 71, shot and killed Hani outside his home.
Before being released on parole in 2022, he was imprisoned in South Africa for nearly thirty years. This sparked protests and outcry in a country still dealing with the legacy of apartheid and racism.
According to Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber, Walus is scheduled to depart South Africa on Friday night, and the Polish government will cover the cost of his deportation.
Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, the South African Minister in the Presidency, stated that the administration did not make the decision.
