Photographs, awards, and books were among the material recollections that occupied the small living room of Syed Akhtar Hussain’s leased apartment in the Gulshan-e-Iqbal neighborhood of Karachi. A big picture frame hanging on the wall across from the door would be the first thing one would see as they walked into the drawing room. The 70-year-old retired banker found “the world” in the picture of five brothers who were inseparable and clung to each other. The majority of Hussain’s time is spent in this tiny space, where he remembers his oldest son, Syed Ali Rehbar, who was shown wearing a blue kurta.
Rehbar worked on a gig basis. In March 2024, during the Islamic month of Ramadan, he was riding his motorcycle on the Jauhar Chowrangi flyover when he was shot dead by street gangs.Among the 104 individuals was the 38-year-old.
