As tensions over the controversial madrassa registration bill continue to rise, the Punjab chapter of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) has called on its members to prepare for anti-government protests, accusing the Center of breaking its pledges on the 26th Amendment.
A JUI-F Punjab spokesperson stated, “We support reconciliation, but the government is pressuring us to resist.”
The religious-political party’s statement follows President Asif Ali Zardari’s worries that seminaries would be registered under the Societies Act if the madrassa bill becomes law, potentially subjecting the nation to sanctions from the Generalized Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+), the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), and others.
