ISLAMABAD According to a survey, the “representativeness” of Pakistan’s election results has not improved over the last 20 years, with successive national and provincial assemblies receiving mandates from less than 25% of registered voters and hardly 50% of those who cast ballots.
According to The News, the “Representation in Pakistan’s Elections (2002–2024)” report by the Free and Fair Election Network (Fafen) highlights the structural shortcomings in matching the composition of the legislatures with the will of the electorate, which fuels political instability in the nation by undermining public confidence in election results.
The current First-Past-the-Post (FPTP) system, which is used to elect members on general seats in the national and provincial assemblies, has structural faults that need to be fixed immediately by parliamentary and political action.
