KARACHI: One of the suspects detained in connection with the death of gold medallist Itteqa Moeen, a mechanical engineer, during a heist in the city, escaped from police custody.
Earlier this month, Moeen, 27, was shot and killed by armed robbers in Gulshan-e-Iqbal’s Block 7. The robbers took his motorcycle, cell phone, and some cash before fleeing.
The suspect’s flight has exposed grave negligence on the part of the court police, as sources indicate that Zahir, the suspect, was not handcuffed or chained by the law enforcement officers.
According to police sources, the suspect in the well-known case was taken before the court like any other criminal, and as he was being moved to a different location, he shoved a police officer and fled.
The sources said that the culprit made a quick getaway by taking advantage of the packed court. They added that if Zahir’s hands had been tied, the circumstances would have been different.
An alert has been issued on the routes outside the city, particularly those heading to Balochistan, and one police official has been arrested in the wake of the incident. The CCTV footage in the court premises is also being examined.
According to the sources, police are conducting searches in Karachi and are inspecting the passenger buses that are headed to Balochistan.
