Sarwat Gillani, a well-known model and actress from Pakistan, has opened up about her own experience with postpartum depression, bringing attention to a subject that is frequently taboo.
In a recent interview, Gillani talked about the psychological and emotional difficulties she had after giving birth to her third child, a girl, on a private TV program. Her moving announcement was captured on camera, and the video has since gone popular on social media.
Other actors on the show talked about their challenges as mothers in a moving piece. Three-mother Gillani disclosed that although she did not suffer from postpartum depression with the birth of her two sons, Ariz and Rohan, the entrance of her daughter brought about a new and more agonizing experience.
“After giving birth to my daughter, I was in severe pain due to surgery and could not meet her until four days later,” Gillani recalled. She was thrown into a profound state of mental distress by the postponed meeting and the sight of her infant having difficulty nursing.
Her voice broke as she said, “I had thoughts of dropping her to end all the pain and trouble.”
These upsetting ideas took over Gillani, so she confided in her husband Fahad Mirza, an actor and well-known plastic surgeon. She sobbed as she added, “I told him I wanted to harm our daughter.” Mirza was kind and understanding, identifying the symptoms of postpartum depression and assuring her that these kinds of thoughts were normal.
