At a press conference, they said that Indian government operatives were targeting leaders of the pro-Khalistan movement, which advocates for a separate Sikh homeland in India, with the help of “organized crime groups like the Bishnoi group.”
As tensions grew following the death of a Sikh separatist on Canadian grounds last year, both nations removed senior diplomats just hours before. Delhi called the accusations “preposterous” and charged that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was manipulating Canada’s sizable Sikh minority for political advantage.
Lawrence Bishnoi, a 31-year-old Indian mobster who is again back in the news both domestically and abroad, was the person the Canadian police were referring to.
According to Indian police, his group is suspected of being involved in the murder of a well-known politician in it.
There are three suspects in custody. According to a social media post made by an alleged Bishnoi assistant, the murder was committed by the gang.
Bishnoi, who was once on India’s most wanted list, has been imprisoned since 2015 and is currently located far from his home state of Punjab in Gujarat.
The cops, however, think his bold influence lives on. In the spectacular murder of Sidhu Moose Wala, the well-known Punjabi musician who was shot dead close to his village in October 2022, Bishnoi is the main suspect.
Bishnoi made headlines in 2018 after accusing Bollywood actor Salman Khan of poaching two blackbuck antelopes and threatening him.
