As the conflict in eastern Europe continues, humanitarian organizations have criticized the United States for its decision to provide landmines to Ukraine.
Washington’s support is interpreted as an effort to halt Russian soldiers’ steady advance into the eastern part of Ukraine in recent months.
Human Rights Watch director Mary Wareham described the ruling as a “shocking and devastating development” for those attempting to eliminate anti-personnel landmines in a news interview.
The US decision was denounced “in the strongest possible terms” by the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL), echoing her position.
“These horrific, indiscriminate weapons were banned by the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty given the devastating impact they have on civilians’ lives and livelihoods,” said the statement.
