The proprietors of the well-known app appealed the decision, arguing that it violated the First Amendment, but the Supreme Court decided Friday that the contentious TikTok ban could go into force this weekend.
There were no significant dissents, and the court issued an unsigned opinion.
The ban will begin on Sunday as a result of the ruling, which came after the Biden administration warned that the app constituted a “severe” national security concern due to its connections to China. However, as the US government has never blocked a significant social media network before, there are many unanswered concerns around how the ban would actually operate. It’s also unclear exactly how the government would implement it.
TikTok may no longer be available to Americans as of Sunday.
