In 2034, Saudi Arabia will host the men’s football World Cup, promising “one of a kind” stadiums and a welcoming atmosphere for everybody.
The choice to give the tournament to the kingdom, which will include 11 stadiums that are still under construction, including one in a newly constructed city, is contentious, though.
The Football Association supported the 2034 hosts at Wednesday’s FIFA meeting, and Saudi Arabia’s application was accepted without opposition.
After the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, this is the second time the competition will take place in the Middle East.
Since 2021, when Saudi Arabia’s crown prince Mohammed bin Salman made sports a major component of his plan, the kingdom has spent almost £5 billion on them.
