At their Taylor, Michigan, home on Saturday, the siblings’ parents reportedly left them after an altercation.
Following the argument, the seven-year-old walked into a bathroom where he was repeatedly stabbed with a knife, according to the Wayne County prosecutor’s office.
The youngster, whose name has not been disclosed, contacted 911 and her sister later died in hospital.
First-degree premeditated murder, felony murder, and first-degree child abuse are the charges brought against the elder daughter when she was a minor.
The teen’s designation as an adult was taken into consideration, according to prosecutor Kym Worthy, but it is not the same as prosecuting the girl as an adult criminally.
The classification “gives the judge the option of sentencing the respondent as a juvenile, or as an adult or giving a blended juvenile sentence with an option of imposing an adult sentence if the juvenile is not rehabilitated,” according to the prosecutor.
We could have kept her in the juvenile justice system instead. We chose to act in that manner.
“The state would have seven years to diagnose, treat, and rehabilitate her given her young age until her mandatory release at age 21,” Ms. Worthy continued.
