ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court reaffirmed that the reserved seats case ruling of the top court cannot be overturned and that the parliament’s change to the Elections Act does not apply retroactively.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) independently petitioned the supreme court last month, demanding an explanation of its decision to award reserved seats to the party founded by Imran Khan. This is when the second clarification was made.
The troubled PTI was granted eligibility for seats designated for women and minorities, the top court ruled on July 12. Nevertheless, the government amended the Election Act of 2017 and the ECP was compelled to ask the highest court for clarity.
