In a dubious border town in Myanmar, hundreds of young men from Pakistan are ensnared in internet scam centers where they are compelled to labor in cybercrime sweatshops to defraud victims throughout the globe out of tens of billions of dollars.
In recent years, scam centers have proliferated in Myanmar’s chaotic border regions as a component of a billion-dollar annual criminal enterprise.
The centers are staffed by thousands of foreign workers who search social media seeking victims to defraud, frequently through investment or romantic scams.
