According to an indictment issued by the US attorney’s office in Manhattan, Eric Adams “solicited and demanded” bribes from a Turkish official, including free and significantly discounted luxury travel packages.
Out of the 110 mayors of New York City, Mr. Adams is the first to face criminal charges while serving in office. He stated that he had no plans to step down. Agents from the FBI searched his house earlier on Thursday.
Shortly after the indictment was made public, Mr. Adams urged the public “to wait to hear our defence before making any judgements” at a press conference.
“My daily routine won’t alter,” he declared. “I’ll keep doing the work I was elected to perform for the 8.3 million residents of New York.
And the more than 300,000 workers in our city’s administration will keep doing their jobs because this is what New Yorkers do.
Today is not fortunate; it is a difficult day. However, there will come a day when we will finally disclose the reason I’ve been through this for the past ten months. I’m excited to defend myself, too.
